Gene Wilder....WOW.... what a kind old man. His mentality made me realize that most cinema productions are garbage, and the way he describes it makes me feel warm inside.... remembering pure imagination (There is no life I know to compare with pure imagination....)

So many classic movies. Modern day actors barely compete with Wilder's oeuvre.

I grew up on Gene's Willy Wonka and I loved the film, however, I find it odd that he called the remake an "insult". With all due nostalgic and artistic respect to Gene and everyone else involved in the film, what about the author? Apparently Roald Dahl hated the film for turning his book into a light-hearted family-friendly musical. Again, I love that version and Gene's performance, but I also enjoyed the remake and think it's truer to the darker world Dahl had in mind.

The problem with writing questions on pieces of paper from the audience is you get this:
1. Please tell us about your wife who died slowly and painfully over a period of 3 years that you loved more than anything in the world.
2. Tell us about the Frisco kid!

I love Gene but he didn't seem too concerned about casting the 'insult' when he was in The Woman In Red, which was a remake.
·
SuperSimmerGal
SuperSimmerGal 6 days ago
To be fair, though, he sought approval from the writer of the script for the original movie before going ahead with it (and honored his only request, which was simply to put "Thank you to my friend (insert writer's name here. I can't remember it at the moment)" in the credits at the beginning of the movie). He talks about it in his autobiography.

Sorry, also meant to point out that The Woman in Red is really only a quasi-remake. Gene has said that his script was almost completely different from the original and that he only borrowed the basic idea.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was not a remake of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory; it was a film adaption of the book, just like the 1971 film was. Saying that the 2005 version was a remake of the 1971 version, would be like saying the 1971 version is a remake of the book.

i have seen the original hundreds of times but it still has the same emotional effect every time i see it. it holds that quality of what a movie is suppose to do which is to play on your emotions & provide an experience for you to enjoy. the remake doesn't have that, it just doesn't have that same quality to it, you just don't care about the characters enough to latch onto the storyline and i think that is what separates good movies from bad, that ability to make you care for the characters.

By far my favorite actor of all time. Brilliant man. Still sad to hear the "dirty" films excuse from the star of Blazing Saddles. It's not that they're dirty, it's that they aren't smart. He's too good for anything that's been on screen the past 20 years.

He's out of touch because he's unaware of the variety of movies available to the viewing public; he probably doesn't watch many movies, so he is, therefore, out of touch. Many movies today, although not all of them, are plenty moral. If nothing else, there are a variety of religion-based movies that have more morality than you can shake a stick at. But thanks for your sanctimonious sermon. I'm sure I'll be a better person for having this self-reighteous and simplistic exchange.
·
SuperSimmerGal
SuperSimmerGal 2 weeks ago
I doubt that's the case. He's said before that he watches about 52 films a year (or somewhere around there, anyway. I don't remember the exact number) due to being a voting member of the Academy (you know, the one that's responsible for the Academy Awards. ;)), and that maybe three of them are "good" ones. So I'd say he's plenty aware of the variety of movies out there, but simply feels that most aren't that great. :)
· in reply to jvaish (Show the comment)
jvaish
jvaish 2 weeks ago
There's a lot more movies made than 50 a year. He's not wrong about there being a lot of movies, at least major budget films, with explosions, violence, etc... but there's a lot more movies out there than what gets sent to him to vote for. There are smaller films and independent films. He's out of touch in that regard, which is still out of touch. Which was my original point.

I agree. You can really feel (at least in my opinion!) how much he cared for Richard and Gilda in particular. I love that he doesn't try to hide his feelings or say only what society would deem the "right" things (if that makes any sense!). He is an honest and humble man- a very rare breed these days.

Especially when he talks about Gilda. You could tell from the way they looked at each other when working together (like Haunted Honeymoon) that they loved each other very deeply, and you can hear it in his inflection when he speaks of her, how his eyes get a bit glossy, that deep down he still loves her. Although he is married again and I'm sure he love his wife, he will always love Gilda.

He's one of the pioneers of cinema and movies. You can search Hollywood over twice and not find a handfull of talented writers/actors/producers than you would find from his decade. Movie makers today use their movies and their inspirations as a platform for modern day movies, its why we see so many remakes of their brillance. Much like music, the garbage today, is just leftovers from an original masterpiece. Most who mock older icons like this are ignorant of their contributions...

I met Gene Wilder & his wonderful wife, Karen, in 2008. I worked in the Corporate HQ of Borders Books, and Gene was doing a book signing for us in our Boston store. I was going to be in Boston to visit my oncologist (both Gene and I have had lymphoma) and thought I'd go "help out" at the store. He & his wife were remarkably kind, and I highly recommend his autobiography, entitled "Kiss Me Like A Stranger". It's a great book. Thanks, Gene Wilder, for all the laughs.

That was special. Age has gotten to his memory a bit but once he remembers he takes off. I feel the same way about the "remake" of Wily Wonka. There is only ONE Wily Wonka! I could see his sadness when he talked about Gilda Radner. Damn, they were only married 5 years before her death? "You want me to come on what??!!" And he says he's not funny!

It doesn't seem fair to call Charlie and the Chocolate Factory a Willy Wonka remake as it was based exclusively on the book. Except for a few parts involving the script Depp was given I would say it was much more faithful to the book than Gene's version, which was created exclusively to sell chocolate.

As much as Johnny Depp's Wonka isn't as popular as Gene's Wonka. I like them both in different ways.
2005 Wonka really sticks to the book. The author hated the first movie.
Wilder's Wonka is whimsical charming and iconic... but that's not really what Willy is which is why Roald Dahl hated it.
Book Willy Wonka really is kind of a psycho and awkward. He's bizarre enough to be amusing to Charlie and the children but adults realize quickly he's nuts and he makes them uncomfortable.
· 4 in reply to OfLanceTheLonginus (Show the comment)
SuperSimmerGal

To be fair, though, Roald Dahl hated a lot of things, and authors in general tend to dislike movies based on their books, so I don't think that's a very good gauge of how good the original Willy Wonka movie is.

I've loved him since the first time I saw him (in blazing saddles at the drive-in when I was a kid) and I loved Gilda from the moment I saw her on SNL when I was a kid. The pain of losing her still hurts today and when Mr Wilder talks about her I still feel heartache. Thank you for sharing this and thank you Mr Wilder for making the world a better place and for being there for Gilda and helping her to also make the world a better place.

Awwwww- I feel so sorry for him. He looks so broken-hearted. He is a great-man and he analyzed the movies right. It's funny- oh let's be crude and blow up things yet Mel Brooks could never make say 'Blazing Saddles' today.
·

If he could still physically and mentally do it, Brooks could easily make Blazing Saddles today. For the same reason a black racial cartoon, Boondocks, which makes fun of racial stereotypes including blacks airs on the Comedy Central. Just like Boondocks, Brooks is immune to accusations of racism because he's a minority, Jewish, and a liberal.

I think it has been that way in the book, for the most part. The book has a more "wide-eyed" perception of everything + a different Wonka (different from both Wilder and Depp), but take that away and you'll see a picture that's much, much closer to Burton than to the old movie.

I love Gene Wilder, but sometimes I really do disagree with him. Tim Burton's version of Willy Wonka was an attempt to adapt the book more faithfully, not a slap in the face to Gene or anything like that. That being said, I much prefer Gene's version (especially him as Wonka vs. Johnny Depp). I also think Gene talking about how movies today have too much cussing and such is strange considering he took part in some of the more shocking comedies of the 60s, 70s, and 80s. Still love the guy though.

It's not a remake, you morons. Why is it specifically the fandom of the old Wonka movie that can't understand this? It's a re-adaptation of the Roald Dahl book and Burton has specifically tried to hire people that haven't seen the 1971 version. You don't call the 2007 version of War and Peace a "remake" of 1967's Bondarchuk's film, OK? Say what you want about the quality of each Wonka film, but if you want to diss Burton's film (which I think is better) then get it right or don't bother.

1. What had Angelina done to win her the name of a slut? She is a wife, a mother, and yes, she may have taken Brad from Jennifer, but it all worked out for the better.
2. I've seen pictures of this movie and seen the cast, and personally, I think it may actually work. I mean Maleficent is a bad ass. Who better to play her than Lara Croft? This is her most brilliant role yet. So please, don't diss a movie before you see it, and don't diss an actress until you know your info. She isnt a slut.

Everything today is crude, vulgar, loud, base, stupid, meaningless with actors being blown up, thrown down, yelling at whatever. It's not acting...it's just gymnastics and aerobics and special effects. After a while, it's just boring stuff. I understand what Gene is saying. If I want reality, I look out a window. I think acting should be a little larger than real life. "just be yourself" is what a lot of actors are being told. God, why would they do that...many of them are boring.
