Andrew Mayne's SPECTER CABINET

If you like the illusions presented in Darwin's INEXPENSIVE ILLUSIONS
book, you'll love Andrew Mayne's latest illusion titled SPECTER
CABINET.

The SPECTER CABINET is a poor man's version of Copperfield's
motorcycle appearance from the Shadow Box he does at the beginning of
his shows. You can build this one for around $60. Let me describe
the trick with Mayne's manuscript in front of me, followed by some
comments.

The effect is this: In the middle of a stage (or your living room or
back yard) rests a 6 foot opened framed PVC structure/cabinet. It is
opened on all four sides (skeleton frame). A bright light shines
behind it. An assistant comes out and drops down all four cloth sides
(sheets will work). the light can clearly be seen through the front
of the cabinet. Now, the best part of the illusion: a hand is seen to
be coming in from the side of the cabinet...then a head...then the
body. As with the Copperfield illusion, it looks exactly like the
figure is coming into the box from nowhere. The front cloth is
dropped and the magician makes his appearance.

The shadow work is worth the price of the manuscript. If you've seen
DC do this you know how magical this effect in itself really looks--he
seems to melt in through the side of the cabinet from...WHERE???
That's magic! In the SPECTER CABINET it's all done with a mechanic's
light on an extension cord.

The way the performer is hidden in the box is very cool indeed,
you'll love it. This is an updated version of the Shadow Box, an
illusion I haven't seen performed in 30 years. I hope Andrew can
perhaps revive other illusions seldom seen anymore. Maybe take on the
Vampire Illusion or the Sphinx Table.

I here too many magician's say Andrew Mayne's magic is junk. I
strongly disagree. If you can get the same response from a $50
version of a $50,000 trick, I say go for it. I'll never forget how
pissed off Copperfield was when he got a better response from Misled
than he did with his Flying illusion. $17.50 vs. a million dollar
trick. Lol, that's gotta hurt.

A few months ago I saw DC live doing the cycle appearance. I was close up
at a severe angle yet no hint of the workings. Plus one of the 2 light guys
had trouble with his light failing and one of the other assistants was
trying to help get it lit. Clearly the effect required no manual labor from
them.

While cruizing e-Bay this fine morning I ran across a very clever idea
for the Shadow Box illusion. Someone has incorporated the principle
into one of those spring-loaded nylon tents--you know, those little
bulbous jobs that look like a the earth has a zit.

Well anyway, you wouldn't believe what this thing is selling for. At
this writing the price is well over $600.oo!!! Considering you can
buy these tents at Walmart for under fifty bucks, somebody is going to
make a nice mark-up.

I don't know the precise method employed in the "tent-gaffing", I can
think of several. However I can offer an educated guess--well, this
is how I would do it anyay.

I would buy two duplicate tents, then cut the sides and rear off of
one tent and sew it to the other one. Foreshorten the half-tent
before sewing them togther. The hiding place would be between the
real tent wall and the fake one.

If you own a copy of UF Grants book GRANT'S ILLUSION SECRETS, look at
the Girl-in-Shower. That's the concept I'm refering to here.

Here's the e-Bay number. It's got a picture of the gaffed tent, it
looks quite normal. I fail to understand why the bidding is so high.
I have a gut feeling the seller is secretly one of the bidders, this
way he can drive the price through the roof.

From what I could see the tent shadow box is NOT on a wheeled platform. I
consider it a major flaw if you can't whirl it around initially to show all
sides.

I've seen the trick live at least 4 times. Would be hard to misdirect me at
this point. And yes, sure would be nice if he would come up with something
new or old so I didn't have to see it a 5th time.

I think DC has more than one way to perform the motorcycle appearance
illusion. It's such a great opener and one of my all time favorite
illusions of his--along with the circular saw illusion. If you've
ever met him you know he's not a very big guy; not nearly as tall as
he looks on TV. This stunned me the first time I shook hands with
him, we were eye to eye.
